The Acadia Axemen and Waterloo Warriors met in the second consolation
semi-final on Saturday afternoon in Halifax. The Axemen dropped a tight
game to McMaster in one of Friday's quarter-finals, while the Warriors
were defeated by the top-seeded Laurentian Voyageurs.
Acadia played tough interior defense down the stretch to defeat Waterloo
76-69, before an announced crowd of 3,862.
This contest was tight for most of the first half. With Waterloo trailing
25-23, and about 7 minutes to play in the half, Acadia was whistled for a
foul. A subsequent technical was called on the Axemen, leading to four
free throws by Mike Zavershnik, and Warrior ball. A successful field goal
completed the "6-point play", and gave the Warriors a 29-25 advantage.
But the Axemen went on a 8-1 run of their own, and led 44-37 at the
intermission.
Derek Cotton led all scorers with 17 in the opening 20 minutes. J.P.
Fleurantin added 10 for the Axemen, while Mike Zavershnik scored 9, and
Derek Maat 8 for the Warriors.
The Warriors fought their way back to within 2 by the midway point of the
second half, trailing 55-53, and took a 59-57 lead with 7 minutes on the
clock. But the Axemen were not to be denied on this day, and tightened up
the defense for the rest of the contest, going on to the win.
J.P. Fleurantin scored 18 points for the Axemen, and was named Player of
the Game.
